Capture network traffic in Chrome and Edge

Use the browser's built-in NetLog capture to troubleshoot awkward network issues.

Need to troubleshoot a browser popup without installing Fiddler or Burp? Chrome and Edge have a built-in NetLog capture that can be handy when opening DevTools on the right window is awkward.

  1. Open edge://net-export/ or chrome://net-export/.
  2. Start with the default Strip private information capture mode and select Start Logging to Disk.
  3. Keep that tab open, reproduce the problem in another tab or popup, then return and select Stop Logging.
  4. Open the JSON file in the NetLog viewer to inspect events, DNS, proxy settings, and connection timing. The viewer processes the file locally in your browser.

Treat the resulting file as sensitive, even with the default mode. URLs and other details can still reveal private information. Include raw bytes can capture cookies and credentials, so only use it when the investigation needs that detail and keep the file out of public issues or paste sites.

NetLog records the browser’s network events. It doesn’t capture every packet on the computer, and Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance lists POST request bodies and IE-mode sites as limitations.
